1 Samuel 15:20-21,23

20 And Saul said to Samuel,  “But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”...

Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,

And to heed(the Word of God) than the fat of rams.

King Saul was trying to tell the prophet Samuel, “ I have obeyed the voice of the Lord”. Samuel says you lie! How can you sit there and say that. And he gives him specifics. God told you to destroy everything, don’t let anything live.  In verse 13 Saul is telling Samuel I have did all that was commanded!  He was feeling pretty proud and full of himself and then Prophet Samuel crushes him with truth in verse 14.  But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”

Only after being told the truth, Saul realizes what he has done.
Saul is rejected as King because he does NOT Obey God, and has just influenced thousands into a corrupted form of obeying the voice of God!   Saul tried offering great sacrifices and failed because in reality

Saul had nothing to offer but his obedience and he blew it!

It's time to obey God, no matter what the cost!
